Many types of virus can be identified experimentally either by there morphology using a scanning electron microscope(SEM) which allows for the detection of the number of capsomers and overall shape and symmetry of the virus. Or by an ELISA type testing based on antigen specificity.

You can only identify a virus through a scanning electron microscope, because they are much smaller than bacteria and cannot be seen by the naked eye.

As with most viruses they can only accurately be identified under an electron microscope as they are extremely small (basically DNA with a protein shell).

The effects of certain plant viruses can however been seen on certain plants. Tobacco Mosaic Virus for example is well known and the effects are seen as light, regular mottling on the leaves (mainly plants of the family Solonaceae - tobacco, tomato's, potato and petunia). This will eventually cause the plant to die.

Other viruses for example can cause variegated foliage (sometimes a desirable characteristic in ornamental plants), although not all variations are caused by viruses.

General symptoms included discoloured foliage, mottled foliage, faciation and stunting. Viruses cannot be cured and the plants should be removed and destroyed.
