I'd like to discuss this rather than answer it as I recently had a problem changing my Wheel on an isolated Welsh hill road. Even the RAC arranged breakdown crew had problems, and the Instruction book and Haynes manual were not really of any use. My vehicle is a 2003 Peugeot 307hdi estate which has a spare wheel winch where you turn a bolt-head in the boot floor to lower the wheel in is cradle. Only there is no cradle, and the jack is in a plastic box inset just inside the wheel flange, so the car cant be jacked up to see whats going on. Eventually my mechanism had to be destroyed to extract the wheel as it was midnight and the nearest Peugeot agent was some distance away and closed for the night. What should happen is that when the Plastic Bung is lifted from the floor with its ring, it pulls a wire up and this releases a clip that allows the bolt to be turned and the winch to operate. Only my Bung had become damaged and the end of the wire had slipped out and dropped down into a recess that looked only to be accessible with a very long-nosed pair of thin electricians pliers, such that the normal owner would not carry. As the clip could not be released because the wire end was lost, then the bolt turned and eventually siezed and trashed the cable on the spool which is supposed to lower the wheel. All were therefore destroyed to change the wheel at my request and I therefore need to look at the cost of a complete replacement mechanism, and also a suitable pair of pliers so it cant happen again. On that occasion I could have changed the wheel myself if I had been able to get to it as I had additional tools in the car anyway. As it was , the breakdown crew were not allowed by one of the main motoring organisations to take me home, as they said that the vehicle had not been properly maintained. They instead took me to there base, put the car on a ramp, and extracted it from underneath.

The way that a person would release the spare wheel on a Peugeot 307 when the release handle comes off is not available. It is best to contact a dealer or a mechanic for further information.
