Lower Timing Chain cover, there is a retainer and one bolt that holds it in, follow the wires up the block, should lead to somewhere on the intake manifold.

What could be wrong with a 1989 Lincoln Continental V6 3.8 if it cranks but does not start?

I can't say for certain but I think that year has a crank sensor which could be bad also it could be a fuel problem or even an ignition problem

If your crank sensor goes out how do you know which one to change?

There is only one crank sensor fitted, you may also have a cam sensor. the crank sensor is located either around the bellhousing or around the front crank pulley. It either has 2 or 3 wires. It picks the signal off the revolving crank so look for a sensor in the block near flywheel.

Where is the RPM sensor in a 1993 Lincoln mark 8?
