How do you change a thermostat on a 1985 Pontiac Fiero GT it is the v6 4-speed if anyone knows PLEASE HELP?

This is easy if done correctly. DANGEROUS if done improperly!
Open radiator cap on radiator to relive pressure in cooling system then tighten back up.
On top of the engine, on the passenger side there is a chrome cap that looks a little like a radiator cap.
Take it off and inspect the gasket. If the gasket is damaged or bad the cap needs replacement.
In the hole revealed there should be Coolant and a little metal bar going across. Pull up on the metal bar and the thermostat will pull right on out.
Shove the new one in and reinstall the cap as long as the coolant level is up to cap level, top up the coolant if you need too. This is an air lock location and is critical to have this area full of coolant to prevent overheating.
Do not use "MOTO RAD" brand thermostats! The "MOTO RAD" product repeatedly (4 times before I bought another brand) became a problem in my 85 GT as the struts that keep it seated collapse every time I rev-ed over 3500 without getting to full operating temp first.

Removing the thermostat can actually make an overheating problem worse. I would check the radiator fan.

To change the thermostat on a sunfire,look for the largest hose going into the water pump.Should be to the left as you look down at your fan.There should be a clamp holding the hose on. Yes the engine will run but not like it should. The thermostat is required on modern engines to get the engine to the proper operating temperature and keep it there. This will give you the very best mileage and performance. The optimum running temperature for most cars is 195 degrees Fahrenheit. without a thermostat the engine will take a long time to reach that temperature all the while wasting fuel. Without a thermostat the engine may run at a cooler temperature which is not a good thing contrary to what you might think. Anyone that tells you that your car doesn't need a thermostat has no clue as to what's going on with today's cars! Microprocessors and sensors depend on a certain set of parameters from the manufacturer. Included in this mix is the engine temperature. Remove the thermostat, and you throw the computer system into a tizzy! Install the correct thermostat for your vehicle and leave it in.
