On the driver's side beside the engine there's a black plastic box with 2 hoses leading to the trottle body (on top of the engine). Take out the 4 screws around the edges of the box and lift the top off. Inside is the air filter. I would recommend spending the extra money (~$50) and buying a K&N high-flow replacement filter (check with your local auto parts store). You'll get as much as a 5mpg increase in fuel economy and added power as well.
According to Haynes' manual for 1983- 1992 Ranger and Bronco II, 2.0 and 2.8L engines are 4Qts w/o filter change and 5Qts with filter change. 2.3 with stamped steel pan is 6Qts with filter change and 5Qts w/o filter change 2.3 with cast aluminum pan is 5 with filter change and 4 w/o filter change
