The oil pressure sending unit is a small roundish device that screws into the block of your engine very close to where the oil filter is attached. It's approximately 1 1/2 inch in diameter and will appear to be made of plastic which most predominantly are. Attached to the sending unit will be a wire with two conductors. The wire is attached to the sending unit via a clip so that it can be pulled gently off, the sending unit removed with the correct sized socket and replaced with a new one in reverse order. Be gentle with this as it really is made of plastic bonded to metal. Clean block surface and apply a thin coat of oil to the block contact surface of the sending unit (just as you would when putting on a new oil filter) as this assures a leak-proof seal. Do all this while the engine is cold and turned off so that you don't burn yourself or get oil all over the place. This is an easy and inexpensive driveway fix but as always, since you will be under the vehicle, its wise to chock your tires and engage the parking brake so you don't accidentally run yourself over.
Some require a special socket to R&R and others you can use regular deep sockets or wrenches. Also, most use a tapered pipe thread that requires thread sealant applied to the threads. If the unit uses a tapered pipe thread, do not over tighten the unit. So be gentle!
It unscrews. There is a socket made just for that. Probably around $4.
The 1997 Dodge Dakota oil sending unit is in the oil pan, on the bottom of the engine. You will need to remove the oil pan in order to view the sending unit.
yes, you will need a oil sending unit socket and should be located at rear of motor, towards firewall. Check with auto parts store near you for socket and ask for a print out of exact location of unit. Have a good day and GOD BLESS.
yes.if you know you really have oil pressure.
Defective oil sending unit, blown bulb.
the oil pressure sending unit is designed to warn you of a low oil pressure. If the sensor goes bad then the low pressure light or gauge will read low when the oil pressure is actually ok.
It is located on the oil filter housing unit. It will be beside the oil filter. You need to disconnect the clip on top of the sending unit, then it unscrews. Once you replace it, don't forget to connect the clip.

No you do not.
There are several sending units in that vehicle such as the fuel sending unit, the oil pressure sending unit, the temperature sending unit. Need to know which one you want to change.
The oil sending unit only provides a reading of the oil pressure to the gauge. It has nothing to do with actually sending oil.
It is right above the oil filter
Oil pressure sending unit is located by oil pan in front. Unplug unscrew and install new one
