On my 2000 Frontier I had a heck of a time figuring out how to replace the rear light bulbs. The answer for me was to remove the brass plate hinge for the rear extender bars. The two bolts securing that hinge to the side of the bed also secure the tail light assembly. The bolts are located about five inches from the edge of the taillight assy.
Once you remove the plate's top and bottom bolts, you should be able to wiggle the taillight assembly free.
You can verify these bolts secure the taillight assy in place by simple wiggling the taillight assy while looking through the bolt holes. You should be able to see the internal bracket of the taillight assembly sliding back and forth behind the two holes.
It takes a little force to remove the taillight assy. Once it is removed you can replace your bulbs and snap the taillight assy back into place.
Here's where the fun comes in. You must take your time when reinserting the two bolts. Make sure they capture the threads of the taillight assy mounting bracket - which of course will now be hidden from your view as it is inside/behind the bed liner.
You might have to play with the top and bottom bolts until they "bite" into the taillight mounting bracket threads. Then simply tighten them up to secure the extender bracket back in place

Its the brake switch on the brake pedal. Its a plunger like switch, its usually the only thing on the brake pedal. Its pretty easy and cheap to change.
The brake lights in your 1983 Nissan pickup truck are controlled by the brake light relay switch. When the brake light relay switch malfunctions the brake lights will stop working.
There is no switch to activate or deactivate the brake lights on a 1988 Nissan. The brake lights automatically turn on any time the brakes are pressed.
Check fuse under the hood of your truck (engine compartment), NOT under the dash.
