The Honda DN01 has two filters that need to be changed; a regular oil filter and the HFT oil filter element. The following is a description of the oil change procedure for this bike, as well as the materials, oil grade, tools and torque specifications.

The oil should be changed on a warm engine. Put the bike on its sidestand. Warm the engine if cold. Then remove the oil filler cap and dipstick. The oil drain bolt under the crankcase is then removed as well as the washer. Drain the oil into a pan. When oil has been drained, install the oil drain bolt with a new washer. Tighten bolt to specified torque which is 25 N-m (2.5 kgf-m, 18 Ibf-ft). Fill with recommended oil of these specifications: Pro Honda GN4 4-stroke oil is recommended, this is sold by Honda in U.S.A. and Canada. If this is not available use engine oil of the API service classification SG or higher. You can also use JASO T 903 MA. The preferred oil weight for this bike is SAE 10W-30. For a bike with a worn engine a thicker oil can be used, for example 10W-40 or 15W-40. The oil capacity of this bike is the following, depending on what is being done:

2.9 liters (3.06 US qt, 2.55 Imp qt) at normal draining.

3.3 liters (3.49 US qt, 2.90 Imp qt) with a filter change.

4.0 liters (4.23 US qt, 3.52 Imp qt) if the engine is disassembled.

The last steps in the oil change are measuring the oil level, with the bike on its stand, then installing the oil filler cap and dipstick. Finally check for oil leaks.

The recommended oil change interval is 8000 miles but many owners change the oil more frequently, for example at 4000 or 5000 miles interval. An oil filter change should be carried out on the 8000 miles mark. The oil filter cartridge is removed by using the special tool that comes with the motorcycle. The part name of this tool is filter wrench # 07HAA-PJ70101 or 07AMA-MFJA100, the last refers to the US only. Coat the O ring of the new filter with usual engine oil, then istall the oil filter cartridge after applying oil to the threads. Tighten with hand until it cannot be moved, then give it a three quarters of a turn with the special tool. Check for leaks before and after driving.

HFT oil filter element change. Note that this is a filter element, not a cartridge. This is located under the crankcase, on the right side of the bike. First, remove the right under cowling. Drain engine oil as described above. Remove the bolts and HFT oil filter cover. Remove the spring and O ring inside. Some oil may drain out of the filter fixture but not much. Coat the new HFT oil filter O ring with engine oil, then install it. Reinstall filter cover, tighten bolts securely.
