If it is the vertical shaft engine like used on riding mowers, the oil plug will be on the right bottom side of the engine as you look at it from the driver's seat. It is either a cap or a plug that can be removed with adjustable pliers or a regular wrench. Place a drain pan on the floor, loosen and remove the cap/plug, remove the oil filler cap for better drainage. After the oil is drained, replace the cap/pug and refill with fresh oil - DO NOT OVERFILL. NOTE: If the oil spills on the tractor footboard, you might want to make some changes before you replace the cap/plug and refill with oil. Add a 3 or 4 inch long piece of pipe to the drain hole to extend it beyond the footboard and make the necessary adaptations to replace the plug/cap on the pipe extension. Ta-da!! You will no longer have to clean the dirty oil off the footboard again.
