This is a skill level 1 project. I needed a swivel, and a short extension to do the job. Your spark plug socket must hold the spark plug, if it doesn't get one that does. To do the job to factory specs, you'll also need a torque wrench--a little 3/8" drive one that can handle 8-20 N-m and will fit in tight spaces is the way to go--some anti-seize compound for the spark plug threads.

To get access to everything release the four spring clips on the air filter box, release the air filter box cover. Loosen the clamp holding the connects to the throttle body. There is another hose the will slide off. Set air filter box top assembly aside.

Do one plug at a time. A stepstool and an old towel to cover the fender will make things easier. I use an old accent pillow to lean on. Check to make sure you have the right plugs. There is a sticker under the hood near the light with the correct information for your truck. Get the correct Champion copper plus plugs. [The dealer put the wrong plugs in my truck and my gas mileage quickly deteriorated to less than 10mpg. After I corrected their mistake the mileage was back to its original 18mpg.]

Use the anti-seize compound on the spark plug threads so you can get them out next time. Finger-thread the plugs until they are snug, then torque them to 20 N-m, or snug them if you do not have a torque wrench. Move on to the next plug. The plug under the brake booster is the hardest to do, so do this one first. Attach the swivel to the socket and the extension to the swivel and it will slide easily onto the sparkplug. You can finger thread the plugs using the swivel and the extension. When you do the back plug on the drivers side you will really appreciate the pillow. The hose clamp on the passenger side, over the back plug, unsnaps easily with a standard screwdriver. The whole thing will take about one hour and cost you less than $30 including the plugs, and the anti-seize. A portion of this article was borrowed.
