Spark plugs are located on each side of the engine, right under the heads, screwed into the block. The easiest way to change them is through the wheel well. Remove each front wheel/tire and then just take off the rubber dust shields at the bottom of the wheel well (held on by push-pins). For even better access you can remove the fender well. This will make access to the plugs very easy. If the boots will not come loose you can cut them vertically with a knife. This requires replacing the plug wires. Use a spray of lithium grease inside the boot to make removal easier the next time. Plugs are on top of the engine. Each plug has its own coil on top it that is part of the plug boot. A bolt holds each coil and boot in place. Remove bolt and coil, then plugs are exposed. There is a detailed article with video here ; www.carbasics.co.uk/how_to_change_spark_plugs.htm
The plugs are accessed through the fender wells. Not to hard to change.
You have to take the front wheels off and go through the fender well.
how difficult is it to change spark plugs on a 2002 ford explorer. It is a 4x4 and has the initials on it xtl or something like that. Can you please help me cause they are trying to charge me an arm and leg to have it done.
it is not to bad on the back 2 plugs it is easiest to go through the wheel weld with an extention and socket
you have to take the plastic off the top of the moter and the spark plugs are under all that stuff i know it sucks but you can have the shop change them for a few hundred
=why do my plugs keep cracking in a 2000 for explorer....changed four already
It can be complicacated since on some models the spark plugs are difficult to get to but I would recommend to find the spark plugs first and then double check to make sure you know where they are.
The proceedure is the same as with other models. Simply remove the old plugs, 13/16's wrench, check the plug air gap, and replace with plugs of correct type.
i dunno if it will help but i have a 93 gmc s15 jimmy and i go through the front fenderwells to change my plugs
Make sure you are using Ford OEM (Motorcraft is not always OEM) Spark Plugs that are designed for you explorer.
Depends on what size engine it has...V6...6 plugs
Obviously- the spark plugs were not the issue :)
