I was just on the verge of replacing the battery in my CMM1000, when I discovered the Type 1-4 mowers have a recall notice on them from B&D. So, although I've already removed the battery for replacement and taken it for dispposal, I've since called the disposal center to retrieve the battery. I figure it's best to reinstall it and take the mower in for the recall service as if it had never been tampered with.
That said, removal of battery is relatively easy, but I'm going to quote the steps going from memory:
1. Remove two screws on the forward end of the black hood, two at the rear between the charging connectory and power gauge, and two down on the sides near the rear wheels.
2. Carefully remove the hood and turn it so you can reach the wires connecting to the circuit board. Two of those, a red and black one, are spade-type quick connects that can be pretty easily removed. Make note of where they are connected so you can later hook them back up correctly.
3. You should now be able to remove the hood and lay it aside. Upon doing so, foam blocks surrounding the battery should also be removed. They are just form-fit, so no problem removing.
4. Next, locate and remove the 4 nuts holding the power cables to the battery, for two upper and two lower posts, noting again that cables interconnect the lower posts to the upper.
5. Finally, unscrew one end of the battery strap holding the battery in place, then lift out the battery. Reinstall by reversing these steps.
