I just went through the ordeal with my 2000 Passport, maybe it will be the same with your's??? There are two almost hidden screws in the air-vents on the side of the lens. Once you remove those you can pull the top part of the housing from the car as it uses a friction pin. There is a screw in the bottom that looks like you'd have to remove the bumper to get, but I was able to pull the housing far enough away to replace the bulb without removing it. (not without some skinned knuckles and appropriate cursing!)
Changing a tail light on the Passport/Rodeo isn't really as difficult as I have seen some people make it out to be. I have a 2000 Passport, so I'm assuming that most other years for the Passport/Rodeo are similar. To change the bulb you have to remove the rear light fixture. You DO NOT have to remove anything on the interior of the vehicle. There are three screws to get the fixture off. The first two are on the side of the fixture in the small recesses that look like vents in the lights. They are diffuclt to see, but if you look closely, they're right there. Take them out. The third screw is located on the rear of the car, between the bumper and the fixture. It's hard to see without a flashlight. Loosen the screw until it turns very easily and gently pull back and up on the fixture. The assembly should slide right out. There is a pressure fit plastic piece that lines up the fixture. Be careful not to snap it like I did. After that, it's easy. Remove the snap fit electrical supply to the fixture and you're home free. Change the bulb and you're done. Getting that bottom third screw back in can be tricky. I found it easiest to put the screw back in and cover it with a thin piece of tape to hold it in place. Once the fixture is lined up you can secure the sides and screw the bottom in by puncturing the tape with the screwdriver. Took me an hour to figure it out the first time, took five minutes the next.
I can't answer your question, but I do have the answer: Buy a service manual from a parts store, of from Amazon. Surely you kept the owners manual??? Sometimes they show some tasks. (I prefer the Chilton SMs to the Haynes because of the line drawings used to illustrate most operations.
and you get it fixed before a cop notices!!!!
On this model there is usually 3 screws holding on the lens assembly.
two are on the side of the assembly towards the front and one between the bumper and the car body. Once removed the unit should come back so you can change the bulbs
On the inside of the cargo area look to where the backside of the light would be. There will be 2 phillip's head screws. Remove those then there are 2 tabs as well, press on the tabs and the light housing will fall out. Then you willbe able to twist the light bulb and remove it. Installation is the reverse.
Which ones? If it is the 3rd break light on top center of the vehicle. There are 3 Phillip screws take them out and replace bulbs and re-install... If it is the rear two break lights. Then open rear door hatch. There are 2 or 3 screws on the light housing remove them pull housing away from the vehicle. Replace light bulbs and replace housing to the vehicle.
Real easy. Lift the rear glass and swing open the rear hatch to expose the vertical row of screws on both left and right lens assemblies. Use a #2 Philips screwdriver to undo the 3 screws on the lens assembly where the problem bulb is located. Pull the inboard side of the lens assembly rearward slightly then tug on it toward the centre of the car. This will dissengage the 3 pins from the body and the assembly will now dangle from the various bulb wires. You will see 3 bulb sockets. The bottom is for the backup light, the middle is for the running/brake lights and the top is for the turn signal. To change the middle one which has the running/brake light bulb, grasp the socket where the 3 wires enter and turn counterclockwise until the resistance stops. Then withdraw the bulb. Replace with a #7443 bulb($5.96 for 2 @Walmart) by pulling the old one straight out and pushing a new one straight in. Test before reassembly. Then reverse the dissasembly instructions.
You can access the brake lights through the cargo compartment of your 2001 Ford Escort. Take hold of the brake light connector. Push the connector in and turn at the same time. The connector will come out. Take hold of the lightbulb, push in and turn at the same time. Reverse the process to install the new lightbulb.
Pop trunk. pull carpeted panel away from interior of trunk to access the tail light housing. black plastic carrier has spring tab press this and remove carrier to access bulbs. Change bulb and replace carrier. reverse rest of steps.
first of all make sure you get the right replacement part. the brake lights are different from the turn signal and reverse lights. you can tell because it has two filaments instead of one.
second open your trunk and look at the holes just under the trunk opening. there are little light fixtures secured in each one. locate the one that is for the break.. i think its the one that is the farthest up and to the side. (whichever side you are working on replacing) you will need to twist the fixture to release it from its housing, (it is held in place with two little pieces of plastic that secure under a ledge on the housing.
with the fixture free, remove the old bulb by pushing down and twisting it, it should come out easily.
next put the new bulb in the socket push it in and twist it the opposite way of the way you twisted the old one to take it out
then put the fixture back into the housing and make sure it's secure.
finally have someone help you check to make sure its working. (if you need instructions for this, please give your car to someone with the brain power to operate it.) :-)

There might be a break in the wiring.
Start with: Check fuses, brake light switch (at brake pedal), check for trailer harness problems, check bulbs.
