How do you change the cabin air filter in a 2001 Toyota Avalon?

Things You'll Need

• Phillips-head screwdriver
• Replacement filter

Open and empty the glove box.

Remove the 3 Phillips head screws along the top of the plastic frame holding the glove box to the front dashboard.

Remove the 2 phillips head screws from the lower left and right corners of the frame.

Carefully pull the frame holding the glove box to the front dashboard out and down. The upper right and left screw holes have protrusions that fit into openings in the dashboard that keep the glove box frame in place. Careful not to disconnect any wiring or wiring assemblies. There is no need to remove the glove box from the frame. The glove box and frame should be pulled out and down enough to proved adequate space between the top of the frame and where it was attached to the dashboard to insert your hands and remove the filter.

The white cabin air filter assembly can be seen behind the upper glove box frame. Carefully push the outer vertical tabs towards the center of the filter frame and pull the frame towards you. Maneuver it out through the space between the frame and dashboard. Careful to maintain the filter frame orientation, replace the filter. Insert the frame back into place. Push firmly to snap the tabs back into position.

Carefully reassemble the glove box frame to the dashboard. First maneuver the upper right and left protrusions into the dashboard holes. Line up the 3 upper mounting holes, insert the screws, and tighten the 3 upper screws. Make sure the lower portion of the glove box frame is firmly against the dashboard frame, insert and tighten the 2 lower left and right screws. A black cowling below the glove box and at the bottom of the dashboard may come loose. The cowling can be reassembled by carefully realigning the tabs to the latch holes and carefully hitting upward with the palm of your hand.
