These are the things to have before you begin:

1. Have three to four liters of the proper engine oil close by. Any 10 W 40 oil recommended for motorcycles will do the job. Make sure only to buy oil that won't make the clutch slip, that is, oil that has additives that can make that happen. Any proper service station selling engine oil will have this information.

2. You need the proper oil filter. Obtain this.

3. You will need an oil pan or something similar for the old oil that you drain.

4. Have some paper and or towels ready as you may get some oil on your hands.

5. A careful mechanic will have a new washer for the drain plug. This is of the 12 mm size.

6. You need a 17 mm wrench for loosening the drain bolt.

7. A funnel is needed for filling the new oil.

8. Oil filter pliers or a strap wrench, adjustable to grasp the oil filter.

9. Prepare for cleanup by having some soap and water nearby. It's a good rule to put some old newspapers on the floor under the bike before you start because oil will almost always spill during this procedure.

Procedure: Locate the oil drain bolt and the filer. They are on the left side of the bike, close to the kickstand. Place the oil drain pan under the drain bolt. Then loosen and remove the bolt. Remove the old washer from the oil drain bolt and replace with a new one is possible. Otherwise, make sure the old washer is not damaged if you decide to use it again. Next, turn the oil filter anti clockwise with whatever tool you use to remove it, such as with the strap wrench. It should not be difficult to remove the old oil filter using moderate force. Let the old oil run out, all of it. Then clean the area where the new oil filter's O ring comes in contact with the engine. Rub some oil onto the new filter's O ring before you install it in place. It should be put in place as snugly as you can, then give it an additional quarter of a turning with the strap wrench. Then, replace the drain bolt in place. Be careful with this, just tighten it normally. Now you fill in the new engine oil using a funnel. Remove the oil filler cap on the side of the engine. Be careful not to spill oil onto the engine or the bike. When you have finished this, you should let the bike stand totally vertical, for example by letting a friend hold it for you in that position for you. This is so that you can measure the oil level with the dipstick. The bike must be straight so that you can get an accurate fill reading from the dipstick. Next, you run the engine for a few minutes and then measure the engine oil level again after letting the bike stand in place for perhaps five minutes. Some of the oil will now have entered the new oil filter so that the level may have fallen a bit. It the oil level is below maximum on the dipstick, you should add oil until a maximum reading is obtained. Be careful not to add too much oil since this can cause other problems. Now, your bike is ready for driving again. Check oil levels and possible leaks at intervals, and always before and during riding the bike for longer distances.
