fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank. disconnect battery, ( the negative cable ), remove fuel tank, being careful not to break ground wire from tank to frame, lower tank about eight inches and should see ground wire. this is important as a loose or broken ground wire will not allow fuel gage to show accurate reading. dont forget to loosen fuel tank filler pipe connections, lower tank gently to floor. pump is usually attached to fuel sending unit as a whole assembly. remove sending unit from tank by gently tapping protuding retainer ring tabs with a brass punch and hammer. even a small spark can set off fuel vapors in tank, and you will see next week before anyone else. remove sending unit/pump assembly GENTLY, DON'T YANK, as it is a delicate unit. inspect fuel pickup sock, (small nylon mesh looking cartridge at end of fuel pickup pipe) and see if there is any blockage. some auto techs prefer to take the thing off and leave it off, as there is the other fuel filter. fuel pump is pretty much self explained, just be sure to replace with good quality one. I ramble on about procedure because if you DIY once on garage floor or drive way, you probably won't want to do again, although will be saving hundreds. this is usually considered advanced auto tech work, done in shop with nice thousands of dollars vehicle lift, and eight hundred dollar transmission floor jack to lower fuel tank, ect. change fuel filter also. take your time and get a helper if you can, good luck.
NOTICE!!
The above information that some mechanics prefer to leave the fuel pump "sock" off is absolutely wrong!! Leaving the sock off will only result in the fuel pump failing in a day or so of use. The dirt and debris that exists in all fuel tanks will ruin the pump!!!! Also, the fuel tank should ALWAYS be DRAINED first! This is a dangerous procedure best left to a properly equipped shop!!!!
