Most of the time, the fuel gauge is not the problem. The problem rests with the sending unit in the fuel tank. To fix it, you must replace the sending unit. This is done in different ways depending on the position of the tank in your particular truck.
empty fuel tank and either remove tank straps and wiring connector or remove the truck bed and replace sending unit. Either way is a pain!
In most cases it's the sending unit in the gas tank at fault. It would require dropping the gas tank to replace the sending unit.
The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank. If your going to change the pump, do the sending unit with it as a whole unit. You'll need to drop the fuel tank to access it, as there is no "cheat" cover over the tank inside the truck.
