Changing the Rack and PinionI have a '92 Civic hatchback Si and I had to replace the rack and pinion a while back. The first sign I noticed is that the steering wheel was loose and it turned way too easily. Also, there was a low sounding popping sound (kinda like when someone cracks their knuckles) when the steering wheel was turned too far to the left or right. I think it turned out the teeth gears where the steering shaft and the wheel shaft meet had been worn and it was time to replace (the original lasted me until about 200,000 miles). Replacing it by yourself I wouldn't recommend because it's a bear of a task. The rack and pinion is tucked up pretty good behind the engine and above the tranny. You have to angle it and fenegle it back and forth without having to undo the tranny or engine. I recommend taking it to the dealership or a trusty shop where they can replace it for you. If you plan to do it yourself, raise the car and secure it well and plan on spending a lot of time on your back. Sorry though because I can't tell you where to start unscrewing bolts.

Answer= ok irst thing u have to do in order to change the rack and pinion is take the wheels off both sides of the front end. then you undo both tie rod ends.. go inside the car. go behind the brake pedal and remove the long plastic guard that is there. there will be a bolt that holds the rack and pinion to the steering shaft. i think its a 10mm if in not mistaking. remove that nut and the rack and pinion wil fall then u have to remove the rest urself. shouldn't take more then 30-45mins to replace. tolls required is a ratchet witha 17mm and a 22mm rench and the 10mm for the rack and pinion nut.. hope this helps u.. don't for get to besafe and use jackstands..
