When to change spark plug?
Changing spark plugs is not expensive and most people do it when they have their car serviced. If you service your car by yourself, then at least every 20,000 to 30,000 km. It would be imperative to change them if the car is misfiring or running very rough to eliminate the mistake of crank, pistol, bearing or head trouble, but most of these problems should be evident if someone knows their way around an engine. If spark plugs were changed and there is still a problem with firing, then change the spark leads as well. The only other option is the distributor cap, points and the dynamo, and that's the entire firing system. All would probably cost around $200 on an older carburetor type engine and maybe more for injection.

Hi, you need a 25 torx and a spark plug socket w/ a 6 or 9" extension and a piece of tubing that is snug on the top of the plug. Remove the wire plug to the coil pack for each plug and remove the 2 #25 torx head bolts. Loosen the plug and with a piece of hose or tubing pull it out.

To be totally honest, if you do not know how to change spark plugs, you should consider finding a friend to help you, since there is more to it than just "replacing" them. When you open the hood, right in front of you will be the spark plug wires, coming from the engine. The black wires, four of them, snap onto the spark plugs. Make sure you have four new spark plugs, a spark plug gapping tool and a spark plug socket (5/8" deep well socket with a rubber grommet inside.) Pull one spark plug at a time (I usually start from the left and work to the right.) You pull the spark plug "boot" (grip as low on the "boot" as you can when pulling up on it- you may want to purchase a plug wire boot puller for about $12.) Then place the socket onto the spark plug (into the cylinder) and ratchet it loose. Before placing the new plug in it's place, make sure you "gap" the plug to .39mm (use a gapping tool - if you gap it too much, the engine will run choppy; too little gap you will burn up the plug.) Follow these steps for each plug, doing them one at a time. Easy task really. Also, spend the $25 to buy a Chilton repair manual. It will give you pictures and step by step instructions for pretty much any repair. It also gives specifications for fluid volumes, types of fluids, spark plug gap, etc. Well worth every penny the $25. Best of luck to you!

Poor gas mileage, misfire or the plugs have over 60,000 miles on them. Be careful when you replace the plugs. Don't use the cheap ones, I did that and my 98 ZX2 ran like crap. Put the more expensive ones in like Bosch Platinums or better yet get the Motorcraft Plugs from Auto Zone and you'll be fine... I did this and my gas mileage JUMPED from around 25 MPG up to 36 MPG.... Put a little antisieze on the threads to before installing them, this will make easier the next you change them to get them out.

If oil is full then recheck your firing order on the spark plug wires to make sure that you put the wires back on in the proper firing order.

THE POINT IS , ITS NOT ALWAYS YOUR FAULT.
