Yes, you have to take off the door panel to change the speakers. The door panels in my '93 Riv are pretty secure. Go buy a service manual from a parts store. Or, you might be able to check one out from your local library for instructions on removing the panels. If you decide to replace the speakers be sure that your new ones will fit, there is not a lot of room behind there. For the record, the speaker size for your doors is 5 1/4. I have had 4 Riviera's ranging from 1988 through 1992. I have replaced the stock speakers in all of them myself with no problems. Also, any aftermarket speaker should fit fine. I have never had a problem having too little space, and have installed various brands of speakers in not only my Riviera's, but dozens of other cars as well.
