the thermostat is located in the bottom of the engine. follow the lower radiator hose

from the radiator to the plastic housing , this is where the thermostat is located.

Now you need to drain the radiator, after draining the radiator remove the 2 bolts holding the plastic housing to the engine. They have a 10mm head on them. the housing will now come off and you will see the thermostat, it should pull right out. then just install the new one and then bolt the housing back into place and refill the radiator, and make sure you only use an original Subaru thermostat and gasket. If you don't you can create more problems, including overheating and headgasket problems. Trust me I've been fixing subaru's for over 20 yrs
