How do you add freon to an auto ac system?

The Real answer Most cars will eventually lose enough 134a freon in their system that the low pressure switch will prevent the compressor from coming on,thus you cannot add freon. if you want to add froen simply take the connection on top of the condenser(looks like a 12 or 16 oz alum can) take a paper clip or small piece of wire and insert into wire part of switch (jumper it out) this will start your compresser pumping, now you can connect your 134a to low press side and 1 can or less to get cool air ...if the 134a can starts to ice on the outside it is empty..1 can 134a process with ac on high will take 15 to 20 min..at least it did on mine..be safe ..use hoses and gauges if possible..follow can directions... If all components of the air conditioning system are working properly there should be no reason for adding refrigerant. this could cause future and more expensive damage to the system.have the system checked for leaks and diagnostics by a professional before adding more.

You need gauges to properly add freon to the system. Using a kit from the auto parts store R-134a can be added to the low pressure hose, it will have a cap on it with an L stamped in it. Follow the directions on the kit. Most auto parts stores sell a prepackaged kit with a bottle and hose. There are two caps on the A/C lines. ONe is marked H and one L for high and low side. They are different sizes and the recharge bottle will only fit on the low side. It's a simple procedure and can be done by the average car owner.

Comment: Freon has been banned since 1996 by the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Some auto air conditioners use R-134a instead of freon.

How do you replace the water pump on a 1987 to 1995 Nissan Pathfiner?

Please refer to http://npora.ipbhost.com for details. Just ask. To replace the water pump it will take a little bit of time u also have to remove the timing belt to reach the water pump. You first need to start by taking the upper and lower radiator hoses off, then the Fan Shrould. Then the fan and all belts. Then looking strait at the engine their will be a ventalation hose on the valve cover on the Passenger side that runs to the intake remove that also after all is removed then you can take the timing belt cover off and before u touch the timing belt get some white out and mark the timing belt where it sits on the Crank and Cam Shafts. After all that the u can remove the timing belt look the timing belt over good u may want to go ahead and replace it at this time i would but the decision is all you'rs. After all is removed u can access the water pump. Good luck

What are the steps in replacing a drivers side door lock cylinder on a 1991 Subaru Legacy?

Okay, I will try to exlpain the best I can. I did this last year on my 1990 Legacy. Okay If you want one key make sure you get the new cylinder keyed at a locksmith to the ignition key. Use your best key to do this. okay her it goes. First open the door. Second remove all screws out of the inside door cover. I think there are three, one of them is in the handle and has a foam thingy in the hole so just pop the foam out and used a long screwdriver. Now that you have all the screws out you need to pop the plastic grommet things out of place, to do this just pry the door at the bottom and continue around until you pop all out. Now then door should be loose but remember you have a elitric window cable still attached to the door. so reach up and unclick the cable so its loose. Now put inside door cover inside or on the backseat so it does not get scratched up. Okay now there is a weather protecter clear plastic thing covering the inside of the door. remove this only on the left side of the door and just roll it back a little. This thing is really good because it keeps your car dry. Okay now you need to remove the door handle. so first remove the to long rod things that hook into the door handle. This can be removed at the door or the handle. The door is probably best because its a pain to put back together. Remove these rods by pulling the plastic conector directly back and it should unclick. Now move the rods out of the way. Unscrew the door handle from the inside, there are two screws or bolts that hold the handle in place. Now pull the handle out from the outside part of the door. It will come with a little manipulation watch the paint though. Okay now that you have the handle out look at the back of it. There is a small wire clip holding the cylinder lock in place. remove the clip and the cylinder should slide out. now slide the new cylinder which you should have already keyed to the original key into the hole. place the wire clip back in place and nopw you have a new door lock cylinder in the handle. Now you can put it back in using the reverse of what you just did. Have fun. Oh yea dont forget to clip the window cable back when you put your door back together. Peace out!!1 and next time don't buy a pre 1995 Subaru cause they fall apart.

well, i am in the same boat as the question. BUT, i have done extensive research and the only places in the world that still manufacture body lifts for subarus of all kinds are in Australia at the moment. And you have to pay BOOKO bucks just to get them overseas.

Fuel Filters
Dodge Ram
Subaru Legacy

When do you need to change a fuel or gas filter?

You should chage them at least once a year if you have an old car, every other year for a new one, especially after the winter months. You pick up a lot of dirt and the car runs harder doing these months.

You might also need to change it when you are broken down along the road with no fuel getting through the gas line which is probably the answer you wanted.

No, dont change them when you are alongside the road....if you are alongside the road already you just count to 100 and drive on like nothing happened!!!!

You need to change them every every 2 to 4 years or 30,000 to 60,000 miles. This is straight from an automibile manual!!

How much is a 1995 Subaru Legacy worth?

Answering this question here is not really valid. The value will in time and based on your location and the supply and demand for the vehicle. Check a website that specializes in valuing vehicles, such as kbb.com or nadaguides.com. Either one will factor in the condition, location, and whether it's a trade-in value, retail value, or private party value.

How do you fix the reverse lights of a 97 Subaru Legacy GT that won't turn on?

You should check the inhibitor switch mounted on the transmission. The cable is attached to it from the shifter. It may be out of "alignment" and need to be adjusted. It would be best to have a subaru tech do this as you have to crawl underneath the vehcile to fix. You should check that first. The lights may be coming on, but not when the gear selector is in "R".

ok first of all check all the fuses that are related to the brake lights. the fuse box may be in side under the dash or under the hood. check those let us know if that fixed the problem.

Subaru cruise control vacuum?

If you're having problems with your cruise control, I would suggest that you check into your Subaru's transmission and engine error codes to see what it's returning if anything. Many times the problem with the cruise can be diagnosed by the vehicle itself. The car will not allow the cruise control to function if it knows about a specific problem, which will be given in the error codes. I don't know what year subaru you have, but look into getting both the engine (check engine light) error codes and the transmission (power light) error codes on your Legacy to see what they're returning. My speed sensor was out on my Subaru. Once I found the problem in the error codes, I swapped it out and my cruise worked just great.

How does one replace the glass on the passenger side mirror in a 1993 Subaru Legacy wagon?

Go to the local salvage yard and look at the same car and maybe even guess and check how to remove/repair. If you bust it, nobody will know.

The glass is glued to a plastic backing assembly, which is attached to the power mirror motors. Very difficult to remove the backing assembly without breaking it. If your glass fell out of the backing assembly, check with Subaru or your local parts stores to see if the glass is available all by itself. If it is, hurray, you can just glue it to the plastic backing assembly, and done. However, if your glass is just cracked and still well-attached, it is best to replace the entire mirror assembly. You can also glue the new glass on top of the cracked one, and if you line them up right, only the most careful examination will see this. If you choose to replace the entire mirror assembly, open door, remove any dust plugs, remove any screws, then pry the inside black plastic protector off. You will now see 2 or 3 screws holding the mirror to the door. Before you get all happy, follow the wires from the mirror to the connector, which hopefully is not inside the big door panel. If it is inside, you must remove the big door panel first to gain access to the connector (watch out for the speaker connections as the big panel comes off). If you can unhook the connector, remove the 2 or 3 screws, and out comes the mirror. Hopefully the one you get from the junkyard is the same color as yours! Reassemble, and done. Hope the motors in your new mirror work!

How do you open the panel of rear door of Ford Focus to fix a broken power window?

1. Remove the door Pull-handle cover (the handle one would hold on to during a car ride, not the handle that opens the door), by inserting a screwdriver into the access hole on the bottom of the handle, and using the screwdriver as a lever, pop off the handle cover.

2. Remove the button covering a retaining screw in the interior door latch backing plate.

3. Remove the 8 Torx retaining screws around the perimeter of the door panel, and the single Torx retaining screw in the interior door latch.

4. Remove the 2 hex bolts in the door handle.

5. Gently lift the panel upwards, to disengage the window weather-strip molding.

6. Remove the Door Latch Trim Panel, be sure to unplug the Power Lock or Window Switch, and remember how the wire was run.

7. Remove the interior door latch, by gently pulling out on the front corner, which is held in by a plastic compression spring.

8. Remove the 4 hex bolts holding the speaker in place, disconnect and remove the speaker.

9. Remove the foam insert in the lower right corner of the door by gently popping the three retaining hooks off of the retaining pegs.

10. Gently (so as not to tear the thin foam) pull the foam and adhesive off of the door frame, starting at the upper right corner, and working around past the speaker cutout in the lower left corner.

Car Stalling Problems

What could be the problem if your 1991 Chevy Corsica 3.1 6 cylinder cuts off and stalls while you are driving and will not start back up for at least an hour?

I am having exactly the same problem with my 1991 Corsica this weekend. I have read elsewhere that the crank position sensor can do this so my mechanic has started to take it out when it broke in two. He needs to remove the oil pan to push it out from inside now. The other possibility is the EGR valve however I wont know that until after the crank sensor replacement. PS not I'm not a pro but I will let you know in a few days. Answer the crank angle sensor on 3.1 and 2.8Liter V6's is prone to damage from stones and mud flinging up from tires in 4x4's and wears out and fails quite easily apparently. My COrsica had the very same problem last week and this repair did the trick and the car runs like new. When replacing crank sensor, it helps to apply heat to the sensor, not a little heat but do not melt it. The "O" ring sets up and makes it nearly impossible to pull out without breaking......leading to more problems than you bargain for. Once loose gently twist back and forth and pull at the same time gently. This helps alot. Ours had the same problem, turned out to be the ignition coil pack, located under the exhaust manifold, gets hot, opens up, cools down runs fine!

EDIT: Catalytic Converter as most of the problems listed here are.

How do you replace the water pump on a Subaru Impreza?

Start by removing cover to timing belt, before removing belt, mark with paint marker the exact spot where the timing pulley has marks, remove belt, and tension pulley, then undo the 6 bolts to water-pump, after removing the hoses and clamps, install new gasket after cleaning where old one was, then install new pump, and new hoses if needed(if not use old ones), then re-install tension pulley, and(GREAT TIME TO REPLACE TIMING BELT) timing belt making sure that the marks you made line up with the timing marks on pulley, then re-install the timing cover, fill with anti-freeze, run until thermostat opens to release air in lines, then top off anti-freeze, and drive car, check for leaks repeatedly during drive and after drive, if no leaks, then you're good to go!

Clutches and Flywheels
Subaru Legacy

How do you check and fill clutch fluid on a 1991 Subaru legacy wagon?

I know nothing about your vehicle, but here's what I can tell you... If you need "clutch fluid" you have one of two things on your hand. Someone is either pulling your chain or you have a hydraulic throwout bearing. A throwout bearing is what makes a clutch do it's job. I know that some hydraulic clutches use the same fluid reservoir as the brakes do so, checking your brake fluid might be one solution. The other, your clutch has it's own reservoir which should be right around close to the brake fluid reservoir. I think it uses the same fluid like my ford Bronco does. I would ask your local auto parts store first just to make sure. Adding the wrong fluid could cost you dearly. P.S. I prefer Advance Auto in my hometown. They will have no problem going outside to help point out their advice. Their aftermarket selection of inventory is above average and the few problems that I have had with them, they were always willing to accomodate my returns. They price match local competitors. They can perform some diagnostics checks for you for free. They can also test some of the electrical components from your car for you if you think one might be faulty. Good luck and Good Day!

How do you replace the headlight bulb on a 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback Wagon?

Manual describes it in section 10-50. 1. Disconnect the electrical connector, then remove rubber cover. 2. Remove the retainer spring. 3. Replace the bulb, then set the retainers spring securely. 4. Install the rubber cover with the top mark facing up, then reconnect electrical connector.

This is simple and easy if the bulb assembly comes out easily. I completed steps 1 and 2 but instead of the bulb assembly simply sliding out the back cover on the contacts came off leaving me with the three contact prongs and nothing much to pull on.

I used a pair of pliers (if you have needlenosed it might be better/easier) and g e n t l y pried the rest of the bulb assembly out and the rest went smoothly.
