First you will need to drain the coolant, then remove the upper and lower radiator hoses. Next you will need to remove the ac compressor and put it aside.(Do not disconnect the hoses or you will lose all of the refrigerant). Then you will need to remove the alternator. (Disconnect the battery first!!) Then remove the bolts that hold the 2 major brackets holding the PS pump and the alternator (set them aside as well) you can leave the PS pump bolted to the bracket. then you can remove the fan and the water pump. then you can remove the lower pulley and you will need a special puller to remove the harmonic balancer. Make sure you put a bolt in the crankshaft before using the puller so you don't mess up the threads. You will also want to lower the oil pan by loosening the bolts and letting it drop about a half inch. Then remove the timing cover. Rotate the crankshaft until both dots on the lower gear and upper gear are pointed at each other. Now you can remove the upper gear, lower gear and chain. Just reverse this order to reassemble. Also, you will want to mark the bolts and all electrical connections so that you know where they go. You will probably have to replace the timing cover if it is a plastic one. Once you have finished reassembling everything, I strongly recommend changing the oil.

Also, these items do not have to be removed in this order, you can remove the items in whatever order you want. I have found this to be the easiest.

Hope this helps you.................. Avdgolfer.

How do you go about replacing the belt tensioner on a 96 Chevy Silverado 57 vortec engine?

Buy a Haynes or Chilton manual and check it out. Unless things have changed at Chevrolet, a 5.7 (350ci) has no timing belt so therefore there is also no belt tensioner. It's chain driven from crank sprocket to cam sprocket. It's internal, behind the timing chain cover, which is behind the water pump, and is oiled via the engine which oiled is something a rubber belt is not. Ever try pouring oil on a tire and taking off??? Or walking through a small amount of spilled oil? Oil tends to cause a lack of traction in either case and so it would on a belt.
