On the bottom of the transmission there is only one bolt and it is in front of the skid plate. Pull the plug and let drain, be sure to clean bolt off, it has a magnet on it to pick up debrie from transmission. the fill plug is on the passenger siide towards the top, it is the same size bolt as the drain plug. I had to take my skid plate off to get to it easier. IN YOUR QUESTION you asked how much it would cost to change to an auto matic transmission. That cost would depend on where you take it. An auto matic transmission fo rit would be around 1,005 dollars on the site that i found plus shipping http://market.autopartsfair.com/Jeep-transmissions/find_product.html?make=jeep&model=wrangler_4wd&year=1998 . but you will still need to get a shifter and several different things in order for it to work. I would have to say at the least it may cost 2,000.Good Luck.
No.
Pennzoil Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid
75w90
75w90
Should be a drain plug at bottom of transmission Should be a fill plug at side of transmission - fill to this level
Automatics all use ATF+4. The manual in the wrangler uses a special manual transmission fluid from the dealer.
I recommend syncromesh
A 1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ manual transmission engine can be filled with 6 quarts of fluid. Its cooling system, on the other hand, can be filled with 11 quarts fluid.
Auto is MOPAR ATF+4 Manual is 75w90
Synchromesh is the best I have tried
Why? There is no need to change the manual transmission fluid in a 2 year old vehicle.
No, dipstick. Fluid level is checked through a plug on the side.
