Replacing wheel bearings for a 97 is quite easy since the whole wheel bearing comes off, instead of having to pack the bearing yourself. First take the wheel off and then loosen the nuts on the brake caliper so you can slide it off of the rotor. Then take the rotors off. ALl you need to do next is pop the black cap off and there will be a large nut you need to get off. After that the wheel bearing hub comes off and just slide the new one on and put everything back together.
They need to be pressed in. You will have to remove the hub assembly and have a shop press the bearings into the hub.
No, no 'special' tool but you do need a decent, relatively complete tool set.
I believe this are done with a press. You have have to remove the wheel hub and take it to a machine shop to have the old one pressed out and the new one pressed in.
bearings inside your sterring colum need replacing
i am pretty sure the front bearings are part of the entire hub assembly. replacing the bearings requires replacing the enitre front hub. at least that's how it was on my 97 dualie.
NO YOU CAN NOT. THE AXEL SHAFT IS WHAT HOLDS THE FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS TOGETHER,WHEN YOU TIGHTEN THE BIG NUT IN THE CENTER OF THE WHEEL. ARE ON THE END OF THE AXELSHAFT.
I'm not sure about the '97 model, but on a '96 it is a relatively simple process to change the REAR wheel bearings. The bearings are contained in a sealed hub; you have to replace the entire unit. Once the brake caliper is moved out of the way you remove the small Phillips head screw that retains the brake disc. Remove the cover over the axle bolt with a screw driver and then unpin the locking tab on the nut. Undo the nut and the entire hub can be pulled off quite easily. Replace the hub with the new one and put the remainder of the parts back together. Happy maintaining,Nick
you need to buy bearings and bearing races most times they will come as a set you will also need axle seals and you will need bearing grease
you will have to remove the cir-clip to get full range of motion to roll the new bearings into place. if you haven't already, its usually a lot easier to remove the axle from the nuckle and disconnect the inner constant velocity joint by removing the torx bolts (i think about 6) around the joint so you can separate the whole drive shaft and bearings from the car.
no!
Remove the tire and wheel from your 1997 Chevy Astro. Remove the axle end. Remove the wheel bearing nut. Remove the wheel bearing and the wheel seal. Reverse the process to install the new front wheel bearing.
