Windshield wipers are relatively easy to change. Most are moved by pulling the arm straight up, pull the wiper straight down out of the lock, and pull up and over the arm. Then put on a new wiper in the reverse order.

Have you ever been stuck in the middle of nowhere with a car that refuses to start? Despite your kicking and screaming, as well as educated attempts to restart your vehicle, you have no luck. To the left of you is a highway with pairs of headlights whizzing by at breakneck speeds. To the right of you is a tree-line with an industrial park behind it. This is an area you have no interest in investigating. Your only option is to walk to the nearest gas station, which could be several miles up the road. Traveling alone at night along the highway is not the safest of activities. Of course, if you have AAA, you could make a phone call and wait. But waiting in your car in this type of environment isn’t the safest of places to be, either. So, what can you do to make sure your car isn’t repairable?

Even if you haven’t been in this predicament yet, it’s likely that it will happen to you at some point in your life. Maybe the details will vary a little, but something similar will occur. That being the case, it’s a good idea to know how to fix this situation. The first thing you need to do is see if the interior light, headlights, and radio are working. If any of these are operating, then the car battery is not the issue. If none of these are operating, the solution is simple: get jumper cables to inject life into the vehicle. This will at least get you to a safe spot. Your first option should be to call someone you know with jumper cables. If no one is available, call roadside assistance. If you this isn’t an option, either, then you will have to resort to waving someone down and asking for help. This option should only be used when all other options have been exhausted. It’s better to get help then stay stranded on the highway all night.

If your car battery is not the issue and you’re confused as to what the problem might be, many cars have a valet switch for the car alarm behind a panel by your left foot. Not many people know of this. It’s possible that you kicked the valet switch with your free foot while driving and set off the car alarm, which will shut down the engine – the car thinks someone is trying to steal it. The solution here is simply to open the panel and flip the valet switch. The car will start.

Whatever the issue might be, it’s always a good idea to have some form of roadside assistance. This can reduce stress and help avoid danger.

Why do 2001 mercury grand marquis wind shield wipers stay up when off?

I had the same problem with my 92 Grand Marquis. Seems that the windshield wiper motor was running in the opposite direction for one reason or another. You may need to replace the motor or have someone look at it. Fortunately for me, my mechanic drilled a hold on the motor and flipped around, now my windshield wipers stay down when not being used, however they stay up when in use... weird.
