the brake and clutch are both contained in the same reservoir and use the same fluid, look at the side of the brake master cylinder reservoir there is a fill line on the side of the clear reservoir
On a 1996 Mercury Mystique : The brake fluid reservoir is also the clutch fluid reservoir
Either the emergency brake is on or the brake fluid level is LOW in the brake master cylinder in your engine compartment
If it is equipped with a transaxle dipstick it will be on the drivers side of the engine compartment - near the brake fluid reservoir
D O T ( 3 ) brake fluid
In the 1997 Mercury Villager, the Transmission fluid dipstick is located on the driver's side of the engine just in front of and below the master cylinder/brake fluid check. The 97 Villager has a bulbous knob on top with no indication that it is the Transmission fluid.
It has a hydraulic clutch ( the brake fluid reservoir is also the clutch fluid reservoir )
I have a 1998 Mercury Mystique LS automatic w/ a 2.5 liter V6 and it takes Mercon V transmission fluid. I'm not certain if it is the same for you, you should probably consult your owners manual.
Check out www . motorcraft service . com ( no spaces ) Click on Owner Guides The owners manual ( which includes that information ) can be viewed on-line
== == There may or may not be a dipstick. To check the fluid level you must remove a plug on the upper side of the transmission. If you can touch the lube it is full. The type lube varies by manufacture. Some use a lube and some use A/T fluid. Check your owners manual or call your local Mercury dealer.
Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid for the automatic and 5 speed manual transaxles according to the owners manual
Check the fluid for a burnt smell or odd color. While driving the car with low transmission fluid its possible that the bands were damaged.
The brake and clutch fluid systems are supplied by the brake fluid reservoir ( according to the 2001 Mercury Cougar Owner Guide )
