I have a 1998 Mercury Mystique LS automatic w/ a 2.5 liter V6 and it takes Mercon V Transmission Fluid. I'm not certain if it is the same for you, you should probably consult your owners manual.

According to a transmission mechanic I talked to some cars keep most of the fluid in the transmission. The fluid has to be pumped out and new pumped in at same time. Not sure if this was baloney or the truth since he was trying to sell his $149 transmission fluid flush.
Filter is internal and does not need service. There is a drain plug on the bottom of the trans. case for fluid drain. Refill thru dipstick tube.

Check the fluid for a burnt smell or odd color. While driving the car with low transmission fluid its possible that the bands were damaged.
