I believe on the drivers side of the manual trans there will be two fill plugs the top one is the fill plug. if you stick your finger in the hole a little bit you should get fluid on your finger. its a rather big bolt head if i remember correctly. its about midway up the trans.
I believe its Dexron ATF fluid. Check the owners manual if you have one.
On a 2000 Ford Ranger : On a manual transmission , underneath the vehicle , on the transmission will be a fill plug . With the vehicle level the fill plug is cleaned and removed to check the fluid level ( the fluid level should be at the bottom of the fill plug hole )

there is a small plug in the side of the tranny you need to take the plug out if you can see the fluid it is ok should be level with the hole.
Should be a plug on the side of the transmission about 1/2 up- fill to this point
