need to know if it is and automatic or a standard shift transmission Automatic has no dipstick to check trans fluid.
It should be in the owners manuyal. If you don't have one, try MOTORLIT.COM I have a 2002 Cavalier w/ the 2.2 and there is no way to check the trans fluid. There is a cap on the trans that screws of but no dip stick. When the trans starts feeling like it's not shifting the way it should, I put in a half quart and it seems to work.
You fill the trans fluid thru the dipstick you check the level at.
It may not have a dipstick. The engineers can be wonderful people. There is a plug that needs to be removed to check it. there is a specific procedure that may be in the owners manual. IF you you check incorrectly, you can end up under filling it as fluid will run out. A 97 Cavalier (not certain 96 is identical) has a red-handled dipstick at the center back of the engine compartment (next to the throttle body). Check the fluid level with the car parked on a level suface, with the engine idling. Example...2000 Cavalier. Automatic. Remove Oil level plug beside axle on the right side of trans.(pass side) Add trans oil until oil runs out of plug. Level is now correct. To add oil, filler is on top of trans(red cap) almost in the center.(unscrew)
Fill it at the same place you check the fluid level.
You add fluid the same place you check the fluid level.
The exact same place you check the fluid level.
There is no dipstick for the trans.
trans fluid goes right in tube used to check fluid level
Idling in park, pull the trans dipstick and check the level.
The fluid level in the trans is very temperature specific. The dealer uses his scan tool to check fluid temperature, compares it to a chart, and then knows how far up the dipstick the fluid level should be.The fluid level in the trans is very temperature specific.
