I ASSUME YOU MEAN AUTOMATIC TRANS. IF IT IS NOT LEAKING THERE SHOULD BE NO REASON TO CHECK IT IF IT IS OR REPAIRS HAVE BEEN DONE, A DEALER IS YOUR BEST BET, THE FLUID HAS TO BE A SPEC TEMP AND VEHICLE UP ON A LIFT TO ACCESS PLUG ON BOTTOM OF PAN, IT CANNOT BE ON A JACK TILTING BACKWARDS

Also be sure that you do not add the wrong kind of fluid. Many people make this mistake, and add hydrolic trans fluid that you would buy of the shelf. My 1997 jetta auto trans used vw specific trans fluid the was mineral spirits. You could damage a maintence free trans with the wrong fluids.
