According to the owner's manual, there really isn't any way to monitor this on your own, it instructs you to bring it to a "qualified technician". It also states that there is no dipstick that allows you to check it yourself. Not much help when you've accidentally drained it trying to change your oil.

How do you check the transmission fluid level on a 2003 ford explorer?

Transmission fluid can only be checked with the engine and transmission at normal operating temperature. You will need to drive about 5 miles to achieve this. If you check it with the engine cold you will get a false reading and could do more harm than good if you added fluid. Leave the engine running and then check the dipstick level. If it needs fluid, at a little bit at a time then check the level again. Overfilling will cause irreparable damage to the transmission.

How do you add transmission fluid to 2000 ford explorer xls?

You do this by pouring transmission fluid into the tube that your transmission dipstick is in. To check for fluid level, drive the car for a few miles to make sure everything is warmed up, then park on a level spot, with the engine running, put the transmission in drive, then in reverse, then in park. With the engine still running, remove the dipstick and wipe it clean, and reinsert it, then remove it again and check the fluid level.
