Cite a book using the author - date format. If it is a direct quote, also include the page number. The related link, The OWL at Purdue, gives good examples depending on how many author's there are. For one author, directly quote, cite as follows, from The OWL at Purdue:

According to Jones (1998), "Students often had difficulty using APA style, especially when it was their first time" (p. 199).

She stated, "Students often had difficulty using APA style," but she did not offer an explanation as to why (Jones, 1998, p. 199).

According to the MLA style-sheet, you cite an article with an unknown author by the first word in the title. For example, the article "American League Meets Today," appeared in the Baltimore Sun back in 1901, but no author's name was given. In the bibliography, you would alphabetize by "A" for the first word-- American. You would then proceed in the standard bibliographic style: "American League Meets Today." Baltimore Sun [underlined], March 20, 1901, p. 6.

Here is another example of an article from a newspaper where no author's name was given. This one was about a famous Boston sportswriter's funeral. It would be under "J" for the first word in the article. "Jacob Morse Rites Largely Attended." Boston Globe [underlined], April 15, 1937, p. 19.

Note that the APA and Chicago Manual of Style may use different techniques-- some style-books want the newspaper or magazine in italics, rather than underlined. You should have no problem finding the major style-books online, so whichever one your teacher or professor wants, follow the rules of that particular citation style.

How do you cite a book in MLA format if the author is a doctor?

Do not list titles (Dr., Sir, Saint, etc.) or degrees (PhD, MA, DDS, etc.) with names. A book listing an author named "John Bigbrain, PhD" appears simply as "Bigbrain, John"; do, however, include suffixes like "Jr." or "II." Putting it all together, a work by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would be cited as "King, Martin Luther, Jr.," with the suffix following the first or middle name and a comma.

You can differentiate authors with the same last name and first initial by including their full first name in the citation.
