Well, one theory is that the chemicals contained in the whiteboard marker somehow reacts to the permanent marker, making it rub off, but it is not an excellent way to clean off permanent marker.

It really depends on what material it is. If it is White, try bleach or oxi clean.
There are many products available to remove permanent marker from wood without ruining the finish. One product that you can use is Pledge to clean the wood.
I had permanent marker all over my wall once. I used the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and it worked amazingly. There is no trace of permanent marker on my walls at all. And it doesn't matter how long the marker has been on the walls for, because i waited 7 months before even trying to remove it. They are not expensive and they defiantly do the trick.

if it is on the housing (plastic / non screen part) get the aeresol version of "goof off" be sure to use it in a very very well ventilated area ----------------------------------------------------------------- To remove a permanent marker mark of an lcd screen (what i did); dab a little hand sanitizer on a napkin then rub the affected area. This has been proven by me, this will not ruin your screen.
Dab some bleach on a rag of cloth that you don't use and try it. My sister is 5 and she did that to my shoes and i tried that and it worked... You can also use Mr. Clean Magic erasers... they work wonders!
I recommend to use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. It has work on mine with getting out the track tartan. It's worth a try.
* use hairspray or nail polish remover. apply to stain and then *dab* (do not rub) the stain. the alchol in these products will make the marker begin to run again so you can remove it. hope that works for you!
