Surprise them with a replacement. the pounds are full of them awaiting destruction.

You can console them by saying that a girl is not everything. They can still enjoy their life without her.
Well if your never going to let her mate,I would have her spayed,if you are going to let her mate,I would make sure there are no male dogs around (if possible) then give her a oatmeal bath( oatmeal bath for humans) and lay down with her and give her afull body massage, this will relax her and she will feel much better.
comfort it

Actually lots of dogs like going into basements. But normally if they don't they are trained not to go down there. My dogs are trained not to go in the basement. But who REALLY knows!?
You can comfort your friend by teling he or she that you are there for them. Let your friend know that there are ups and downs in life, but always get up when your feeling down. You can also take your friend out somewhere fun that you know that both of you would enjoy. Spending quality time, and being that shoulder to lean on will make your friend feel much better.
In my opinion, dogs look for the spot they are most comfortable with! Lol It all goes back to the days when wolves used to circle their sleeping spot to tred down the straw or hay they would sleep on for comfort
