I like to oven roast yams to bring out the natural sugars in the yam and carmelize them. Leave the yams whole, prick a few holes in the skin to allow steam to escape, wrap each one in tin foil, then roast in the oven at 400 degrees under tender to the center. (Cooking times will vary depending on the size of the yam, you can always finish off stragglers -- without the tin foil -- in the microwave). Add a small pat of butter, and serve.

Some people also like to use honey, maple syrup, or even toasted marshmallows to sweeten up their yams.

Here's a short tutorial on how to prepare Baked Yam and Pineapple :

In order to make this recipe, you need to have 5 cups of mashed yams, a cup of pineapple tidbits,1/4 cup of salt butter, a teaspoon of salt, 1/4 pound of marshmallows and 1/4 cup of pecan halves. It is also important to have a tablespoon of brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon on rum flavoring and 1/4 cup of halved cherries. Get a nice bowl and mix the rum flavoring, brown sugar and cherries together. Add the remaining ingredients except the crops and mix.Once done, next transfer the mashed vegetables in a baking dish. Top it with mixture. Start preheating the oven with 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Next place the baking dish in the oven and start cooking it for a period of 40 minutes. Come back and keep checking the dessert every 5 minutes. The dessert should be done once the color of the mixture turns brown.

Why do you bake a yam in foil?

You don't have to. Some people like to wrap it because they won't have to clean the bottom of the stove afterwards. I never use foil (makes the yam a bit soggy to me). I just put the yams ontop of some foil and bake them that way.

Why can't you bake yams in a fire place?

You can! Make sure you poke some holes in the skin of the yam, then wrap with foil. Cooking time is similar to that of conventional ovens, and is dependent upon the size of the yam/sweet potato or Idaho.
