Cooking rice in a microwave oven is dependent upon what type of rice is being cooked.
Instant Rice is the easiest, and generally has rules for microwave preparation on the box.
For regular rice, several factors must be taken into account: Type of rice (brown or white), the power of the microwave, and what type of rice you want to cook.
Things you will need:
- Microwave Safe Container (1 quart or Larger)
- Liquid Measuring Cup
- Dry Measuring Cup
- Salt
- Water
- Rice
First, Determine how much rice you wish to cook. For 1 cup of rice, you will need approximately 12 - 16 ounces of water.
Microwave the water alone for 2-3 minutes, uncovered, taking care not to burn yourself when you remove it from the microwave.
Add 1 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and stir until completely dissolved.
Add 1 cup of rice. and stir for 1 minute, being sure that all grains are wet.
Place a loose covering over the bowl ( paper towels will do) and microwave for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring every 3-4 minutes. Take care not to burn yourself with the steam.
Let the rice sit inside the microwave after the microwave has stopped running for 3 to 5 minutes.
Whole grain rice may take longer, and you may have to add more water.
All times and measurements are approximate, based upon type of rice (whole grain takes longer), oven wattage, and preference of "dry" versus "moist" rice.
