The proper way to pronounce it is how it's spelled, sound it out:
car-a-mel (i.e. kahr-uh-mehl)
It is also correct to pronounce it kahr-mehl or kahr-muhl because when you try saying the correct pronunciation a few times fast, that is how it sounds.
IT IS INCORRECT TO PRONOUNCE IT CARE-UH-MEHL. If it was meant to be pronounced like that, it would be spelled caeramel or cairamel.
