Of all the forums out there, I personally prefer SimpleMachines. It is very easy to set up, customize and manage and has a great many add-ons, modules, themes and support.
All of these usually have installation packages for one or two click installation through Fantastico, which is often included in your Web Hosting package. You will want to check with your web host to see if this is installed, or if you have to install your forum manually. Installation is generally pretty self explanatory and easy.
You simply follow the directions to install the forum. Generally speaking, you will want to install your forum in a sub directory ( www.yoursite.com/forum) on your main site or as a sub-domain (www.forum.yoursite.com).
Regardless of how you install the forum software of your choice, it is then simply a matter of linking to the main forum page from the pages in your main website.
You will need to go look for "themes" or "templates" for your forum to customize the look and feel - to match it with your main site. These themes are usually free, and are very easily customized by changing graphic images and the CSS stylings of the forum.
Set up is pretty straightforward too. You set up categories and topic areas for people to post their "threads" into. Some basic organization goes a long way here and will help the forum be organized, helping people find what they are looking for and keeping each forum "on topic".
Forums can be a great way to add a community to your site and provide a much needed gathering place for like minded people.
