You should never do electrical work on a vehicle without disconnecting the battery. Saying that, if you are making these connections correctly you will not blow a fuse. You are doing something wrong.
The airbag light in the 2003 GMC ENVOY can be reset by disconnecting the battery for about 5 minutes. Then reconnect the battery, turn the key to on without starting the vehicle, and pump the gas pedal three times if the light is still on after reconnecting the battery.
If you are careful and do not let the positive cable to the alternator come in contact with the motor or frame, nothing will happen. It is just a lot easier and safer to disconnect the positive cable from the battery. It saves possibly shorting out the cable and possible ruining the battery.
