You have to Import the audio/music into WMM (Windows Movie Maker):
> Click the Import Media button on the top menu
> Browse for the audio/music you would like to use
> Click Import (it may automatically import it depending on your program version)
If it has been imported correctly, it should be visible in your Imported Media viewing pane as well as an Imported Media folder.
To add the audio/music to your project:
> Change to the Time-line view
> Click, hold and drag the audio file into the Audio/Music track
> Click the play button in the Preview pane for result of the action
You can't do that on Windows Live Movie Maker, but you can extract the audio from a video in Windows Movie Maker v2.6 and save/publish it as an audio file.
Make sure you have Published/Finished your Windows Movie Maker project file first. Once you have done that, download and install an audio converter on your computer. Use the converter to convert the .wma audio file (produced by Windows Movie Maker) into a .mp3.

Google: free audio converters and download one. Convert the audio to one of the file name extensions compatible with Windows Movie Maker.

Windows Movie Maker 2.6 is a Vista ONLY download. Unfortunately, Xp users can only download the 2.1 version of Windows Movie Maker.
