The extract lasts indefinitely since it's alcohol based. Vanilla pods are best used as fresh as possible.

What vanilla is made of?

Vanilla is a flavoring and an aromatic. It comes from the seeds of an orchid. The vanilla beans are the pods of the orchid that hold the seeds. The seeds can be used directly in foods and the pods are often used to flavor foods by steeping them in hot liquid. Vanilla extract often used in baking is made by soaking the beans in an edible alchohol to extract their flavor and then bottling the resulting liquid.

Is vanilla an acid?

No. Vanilla extract is made by steeping thinly sliced vanilla pods in a mixture of hot water and alcohol. The liquor is filtered, aged in glass containers, and bottled for sale.

Can you use vanilla extract instead of vanilla essence?

Yes,Vanilla is a flavoring derived from the seed pods of orchids in the genus Vanilla native to Mexico.Vanilla essence comes in two forms.# Real seedpod extract is an extremely complicated mixture of several hundred different compounds. # Synthetic essence, consisting basically of a solution of artificial vanillin in ethanol.Humans can tell the difference between the artificial essence and the real extract, the real extract is much, much better. Is there a recipe for making your own vanilla?

You can make your own vanilla extract by combining vanilla beans (the seed pods) and alcohol, either vodka or rum. Vodka is relatively flavorless but rum will add a certain taste to your vanilla extract. Recipes differ, but one measurement is 10 vanilla beans, split lengthwise, to 1 liter of alcohol. Let steep for three weeks before using.

How can you substitute vanilla essence with vanilla extract?

Vanilla extract can be substitute for vanilla essence on a 1:1 basis (e.g 1tsp of vanilla extract is equal to 1tsp vanilla essence), on a strength-for-strength basis at least. But the flavour of vanilla essence will never be as good as the flavour from vanilla extract, no matter how much of it you use.
