For automatic trans look under the hood to the rear of motor near fire wall there should be a dipstick and you use a long funnel to fill. If it is a standard then you must get under the vehicle to fill there will be a plug in the side near top u can use a rachet to remove the plug then pump in the fluid till it starts running out at you. Hopefully its the automatic for your sake its alot easier and cleaner up top
The manual transmission usually has a plug in the side of the transmission that can be used to check the transmission and also used as a filler hole.

I believe it is on the passenger side of the transmission behind a heat shield
i had the same problem with my 90 ranger and i had to get a new pcm. that is the computer that tells the injectors to open and close.

80-90 w gear lube ANSWER Motorcraft Mercon Automatic Transmission Fluid in your 1993 Ranger manual (Mazda )transmission (YES - ATF ! ) 80 gear lube was used in 1991 + 1992 for the Mitsubishi manual transmission / 2.9 L engine equipped Rangers
MERCON . Simply stated, There is no substitute. 80W-90 Gear oil because mecron is to thin
Okay- Do not put automatic transmission fluid in a manual transmission! You need to put gear oil in a manual transmission. This is usually brown like oil and about 90 weight. Fill gearbox until the level is up to the fill hole but not flowing from the fill hole(as the fill hole is on the side of the gearbox).
FORD recommended Mercon-ATF for the Mazda 5-speed manual OD transmission in the 1992 Ranger XLT. 90 weight gear lube is probably way too heavy for this type of smaller transmission.
Careful here. The 1992 Ranger with a 5 speed manual required Automatic Transmission Fluid. Ford applications require Mercon-Desron II or III. Do NOT add the SAE60-90 gear oil to this vehicle, play it safe and add the ATF.
