Pick up on statements that are more leading to denial. Someone who is being honest would say directly, "I'm not selling/renovating the house." If he's lying, he may say, "I never said I was selling/renovating the house," in itself a truthful statement, as he *isn't* saying to you his actual plans. When in a conversation with his wife ask her if the house is in both their names. If so he can't sell that house without her permission.
