This depends on the producer of the engine. The engine number on a Honda motorcycle will give information about the year of manufacture, the type and other things. Look for the letter E in the engine number. If it is a Honda then the first four digits that come before the E are the motorcycle model number. Then there is a dash with seven digits after it. This refers to the engine casing and is used for ordering spare parts. This is a kind of type number within the engine number. Any serious Honda dealer would be able to decipher the engine number when you bring it to him. If it is not a Honda you can still find the bike type by using engine number lists available on the internet but it may take a long time. I have added on link here as an example of what you might be looking at.
