According to the picture in my Chilton repair manual:
The # 1 position on the distributor cap faces towards the passenger side and slightly towards the front of the engine
The firing order is ( 1 - 8 - 4 - 3 - 6 - 5 - 7 - 2 )
The distributor rotor turns CLOCKWISE
The engine cylinder locations are numbered :
firewall
8 - 7
6 - 5
4 - 3
2 - 1
front
It should be marked on your distributor cap. Just find the wire next to the one and follow it to the cylinder.
Easiest way to find it is to set #1 piston at TDC and remove the distributor cap to see where the rotor is pointing. It should be pointing to #1 cylinder position in relation to the distributor cap.

The #1 cylinder should be the first plug clockwise from the electrical connections on an HEI distributor. Or, the first plug clockwise from 3 O'Clock when facing towards the rear of the vehicle.
If you look at the distributor of the car, sometimes they are marked with the cylinder number on the cap. Find number 1 and follow the spark plug cable to the spark plug. That will be No. 1 cylinder.
engine front to back: 1,2,3,4,5,6 distributor from #1 going clockwise: 1,5,3,6,2,4 how do you find #1 on distributor
you really cant find it? the spark plug wires only come off of it! back of the cylinder head!
You may not have a distributor with wirse. Look under the coil packs. You should find them there. You may not have a distributor with wirse. Look under the coil packs. You should find them there.
