Your question needs a few more details, but I'm guessing when you put it in 'R' it won't go into reverse unless you continue on into 'N' neutral. My car also has the 'D' affected. I have to put it into '2' in order to be in Drive. This is indicative of a bad spacer washer on the gear shift cable - it has disintegrated. You will have to have a new shifter cable installed. Go to a regular mechanic for this - NOT a transmission shop.
