The transmission vent on a 2001 Ford Taurus is found on the engine. It is on the driver's side of the engine.
The vent door at blower is broken, very common and very hard to fix.

might be a stuck vent door in the dash all vents are working properly
On a 1997 Ford Taurus : In the power distribution box ( which is " live " ) located in the front of the engine compartment , near the battery ( mini fuse # 28 is a 15 amp fuse for the heated oxygen sensors and canister vent )
On Taurus 2003 and on Ford windstar it's located on top of the transmission, close to the shifting lever. It's covered with a small rubber cap that has inside ribs to allow air flow.
what you only need to replace is the blower motor speed controller or also kown as a blower motor resistor.

broken oil seal? i had something simialr with my new Ford Fusion, turned out to be oil seal. I had some fumes coming in through the air wents inside as well , though.
