If you really want to fix it, then you will have to drop the fuel tank and remove the sensor, go from there. You can check the float while it is your hand, just plug the wire harness in, move it up and down and have someone check the gauge. Might also be the gauge needle in the dash. You will find out this way.
replace the fuel float inside the gas tank.

my gas gauge doesnt work and i dont get a warning light when about to run out, mine goes to fuel when its about to run out
first thing is to work out which part is at fault? I would start with dash gauge, find wire at fuel tank which goes to gauge, earth this wire out to body while having friend watch fuel gauge, if it goes straight to full it mean dash gauge is good but sender unit in fuel tank is probably at fault. Go to car wreckers for s/h part.
the fuel guage in my 1993 Saturn goes wiggling back and forth. how do i fix this problem?
it could be your fuel sending unit or the float in the tank less likely your gauge is bad but that could also be the problem
I'm NOT 100% sure on this answer but do this and we will find out. If you are having a fuel gauge problem then CALL a Chevy parts house and ask them if they sell a FUEL LEVELING SENSOR by itself. If they do then buy it and install it on the fuel sending unit that is inside of the fuel tank and that will fix your gauge for awhile. Overtime the sulfur in the gas COATS the fuel leveling sensor and the gauge goes crazy. You may have to buy the WHOLE fuel pump sending unit just to fix your gauge. That will be A costly repair. Like I said, Don't know if they sell it by itself or not.
its a transistor located behind the cluster panel.usually cost 45 dollars from nissan......symptons are usually empty fuel reading and temp reading are nil. If fuel gauge goes from empty to full can be ground wire problems.
Did you check the -- sending unit !!
Ground the power wire and have someone watch the gauge. If it goes to full then the gauge is working. Clean the ground connection and turn the key on and if it reads then it is okay. If not then you have a bad sending unit.
Fuel tank sending unit. Fuse.
You must have a 1998 or newer truck. There is no FUSE for the fuel level gauge. Now there is a fuel leveling sensor on the sending unit that is inside of the fuel tank and that is what controls your fuel gauge. It is common for the sensor to get coated with suffler that is in today's fuels / Gas. You will have to remove the FUEL LEVELING SENSOR That's in the fuel tank and REPLACE it with a new one from the Chevy dealer.
