Front Rear End? Does that make sense? Front differential? maybe? Low fluid, wheel bearing, choppy worn tires?

First check the level of the lube in the rear differential. If it is low add the correct weight lube. If not, then you have worn gears. Also check your rear wheel bearings as that is what you may be hearing.

Remove the cover and look for damage.
Rear shocks/struts are bad.
More likely u-joint, check that first.
On a 1997 Ford Explorer : If it is equipped with the folding rear seats there will be a lever on each end of the split seat ( bottom section ) that you hold down while folding the seat
